While I missed my students during the lockdowns – the merriment, conviviality, the tumble of bike helmets, shoes, school bags and coats in the hallway – I was delighted and relieved at how well online lessons worked out. In fact, several of my students have chosen to continue to learn online, and I now also teach students in other countries, online.

I provide specific advice and (simple) instructions on how to set things up, ranging from where to position the computer, to how to tweak zoom to optimise it for music. Facetime is sometimes better for audio quality and ‘lagginess'. But I have developed creative ways to use screensharing on zoom, which work really well.

Perhaps the most important requirements of all, though, are old-fashioned ones: the same degree of peace and quiet as you would expect for an in-person lesson and, in the case of children, the same parental engagement.
